Cody Grant 'Weezer' SoperHe was born March 1, 1984, in Pittsburg to Lisa. He was a lifetime resident of Scammon. He attended Scammon Elementary School, Central Junior High, and was a 2002 graduate of Columbus High School. He worked for Fireworks Spectacular, the City of Scammon, and Josie's Ristorante in Scammon. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Scammon. While in junior high, he played sports. When he was younger he was active in Cherokee Little League. Survivors include his parents, Lisa and Danny of Scammon; brother, Tyler of the home; sister, Danielle of the home; brother, Dillon of the home; brothers, Cody of Overland Park, and Casey of Columbus; maternal grandmother, Coleen of Scammon; paternal grandmother, Sandy of Columbus; maternal great-grandmother Marjorie of Scammon; paternal great-grandmother, Thelma of Columbus; and several aunts , uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Maurice and his maternal grandfather, Bill . Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir, with Elder Larry Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Bridget's Cemetery in Scammon. There will not be formal visitation but friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. today. The casket will remain closed at all times. Last names have been taken out for their protection. A look back at 2005 HEAD:No. 7 - Fireworks explosion According to the Kansas Highway Patrol at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18 employees of Fireworks Spectacular, were unloading class B, professional fireworks from a mobile trailer into one of several stationary trailers called magazines on the grounds of Fireworks Spectacular. As they were unloading the mobile unit, the explosives were detonated. Trey Robinson and Daniel Lee Groves, both 29 of Scammon, were killed in the accident. Cody Soper, 21, of Columbus, Craig Banke, 32, of Cherokee, and Ryan Holding, 24, of Columbus, were hospitalized. Soper died in the St. John's Medical Center Burn Unit in Springfield, Mo. two days later. A cause for the explosion was never determined.
